I have two internet connections (yeah it happened so, dont ask me how) at home. One is airtel (256kpbs) and other is BSNL (256kbps) both unlimited. Right now when one goes down I just plug the other and use. Is it possible to use both at the same time (when they both are up), at 512kbps and automatically switch to one when the other goes down?
Thx in advance,
Rupa

Have you tried to use two gateways (airtel and bsnl) with Metric?
Steps
1. Go to local area connection properties
2. Double click on TCP/IP properties
3. Advanced
4. Select the gateway already present. Click edit
5. Uncheck Automatic Metic. Type 1 against the metric. Click OK.
6. Click Add. provide the second gateway. Uncheck Automatic Metic. Type 2 against the metric. Click OK.
7. Click OK and exit out.
Done

Are you using network card interface for both? Can you connect both at same time?

The solution provided by Kris would work only as Active standby and not as a load balancer.
As Tonypv rightly pointed out, it all depends on the number of NIC you have.
To have a load balancer, u need a multiplex router
here are 3:

If you are not ready to shell out at this point in time, then
This may be your best bet.

I'm using different software solutions right now to multiplex my two internet connections. If I could move to hardware, that would be definitely better. Having said that, these routers are either too costly or not available in India right now when I checked out. Also, the links that you have provided are mostly outdated. Have you implemented this type of load balancing properly anytime?
Oh and that NetBT load balancing, it doesn't work. I tried it, but no effect. Looks like it's applicable only to NetBT connections.

On a related note, I have posted this, which talks about almost the same concepts:
